Kaleb Schlatter is a double major in history and cinema with a minor in Arabic studies and a certificate in Jewish studies. His undergraduate historical research looked at non-Jewish Iowans’ engagements with the state of Israel and its precursor settlements between 1941 and 1960 as moments in geopolitical coalition making. Their interest in historiography has addressed U.S. foreign relations, the global Midwest, the politics of Christianity, and historiographical encounters with modern proliferations of images. Kaleb is interested in film cultures of Southwest Asia and North Africa, nonfiction modes, film as popular and public historical practice, political economy of cinema, analog processes, archival film, and the construction and circulation of archives. His first video project at Iowa reconstructed the Iowa Coalition Against Apartheid’s 1985 occupation of the Jessup Hall administrative building on the University of Iowa campus. Some of his favorite movies include Chronicle of the Years of Fire (1975, Mohammed Lakhdar-Hamina), The Time That Remains (2009, Elia Suleiman), Yentl (1983, Barbra Streisand), Sound of Falling (2025, Mascha Schilinski), Fellini’s Casanova (1976, Federico Fellini), and What’s Up, Doc? (1972, Peter Bogdanovich).
